Massachusetts Divorce: Dividing Property

All divorcing couples must divide their marital property and assign marital debts as part of the divorce process. Massachusetts law requires the division of property in a divorce to be equitable. That means it must be fair though not necessarily equal. Spouses usually divide property by giving specific items to each spouse or by selling assets and apportioning the proceeds. If spouses are unable to reach an agreement without court involvement, an arbitrator or a judge will divide the property and debts in a way that is fair under the circumstances.

If you have questions or contemplating how best to divide your marital property, we encourage you to call our office first. We take the time to speak with you to understand your situation and discuss how we will be able to assist you.

If you need assistance with the division of assets in your pending divorce, our experienced Massachusetts lawyers are here to help.
